Practical Information

Climate & Environment

North Sumatra has a hot, humid tropical climate year-round.

  • Dry season: May–September
  • Rainy season: November–January
  • Average temperatures: ±28–30°C
  • Expect humidity, sudden rain showers, and muddy terrain during trekking.

Be prepared for heat, sweat, and rapidly changing weather.

Cultural Respect & Dress Code

To respect local customs—especially in Batak and rural villages:

  • Wear trousers covering the knees
  • Wear shirts covering the shoulders
  • Avoid shorts, sleeveless tops, low-cut shirts, and tight clothing

Loose, breathable clothes are ideal for the climate.

In the jungle, swimwear is acceptable for river baths.

Important Wildlife Guidelines

Gunung Leuser National Park is one of the last sanctuaries of the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan. Human behaviour has a major impact on their survival.

DO NOT:

  • Do not approach closer than 15 meters
  • Do not touch them
  • Do not feed them
  • Do not offer drinks
  • Do not take selfies at close distance

Human contact can cause:
