Important Notes during the trip
1. Please note: Travel by
motorized canoe is sometimes not possible due to low water levels, especially
during the dry season. When the river is too shallow to navigate, we continue
the journey by trekking through the dense Siberut rainforest to reach the
Mentawai family who will host us. We adapt to natural conditions to ensure a
safe, authentic, and truly immersive experience.
2. We reserve the right to modify, delay, or adjust the itinerary
or program during the trip in order to adapt to natural conditions and ensure
everyone’s safety. Decisions are made
based on our local knowledge of the area, particularly in response to weather
and environmental conditions.
3. This experience will push you beyond your comfort zone. Unlike
a standard itinerary, this journey is flexible, allowing for a deeper immersion
into local life and culture. There is no fixed schedule, as each
day unfolds organically based on the rhythms of the Mentawai people. If we are
fortunate, we may even have the rare opportunity to witness traditional
ceremony during our stay.
Practical Information and Terms & Conditions
Living Conditions & Expectations
- You will be living under the same
conditions as the local Mentawai community in a remote village.
Accommodation is extremely basic, with a floor mat and mosquito net for
sleeping. There are no modern comforts, as this is an authentic jungle
experience.
- Given the isolated nature of
these villages and the limited resources available, the level of comfort
and cleanliness may not meet typical Western standards. There will be no
toilet. The families who welcome us into their homes do so with
generosity, despite living in the jungle.
- It is essential to approach this
experience with an open mind and a spirit of adaptability. Embracing these
conditions will allow you to fully immerse yourself in the Mentawai way of
life and make the most of this unique cultural exchange.
- Mentawai traditional communities
live in remote jungle areas, making access challenging. The trek involves
navigating muddy terrain, slippery and uneven ground, and, at times,
walking on logs that the Mentawai use as makeshift bridges to cross
difficult paths.
Important Considerations
· Sumatra, located on the equator and covered in dense rainforest, has a
tropical climate with hot and humid conditions year-round. The driest season
typically runs from May to early September, though occasional rainfall can
still occur. The wettest months are from November to January, bringing frequent
and heavy rains. On Siberut Island, temperatures range between 31°C and
33°C. Be prepared for hot, humid, and unpredictable weather
conditions throughout your journey.
- No Electricity: There is no electricity in the Mentawai jungle, so
be sure to charge your camera and phone in advance and bring extra
batteries.
- Physical & Mental
Preparedness: This journey can be
physically and mentally demanding. The remote conditions may feel
challenging at times, requiring each participant to have:
· Strong mental resilience
· High adaptability to unfamiliar environments
· A good understanding of Mentawai culture and jungle life before departure
(Your guide will provide a briefing and essential information before the trip
begins). Being well-prepared will allow you to fully embrace this
once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Important Things to Know During Your
Immersion Stay
- Be mentally prepared for a rustic experience, as many tribes lack the
basic comforts common in Western lifestyles.
- Allow yourself time to connect with the community and embrace the experience
fully.
- Be authentic—show genuine interest, engage with them, and learn from
their way of life.
- Stay present—your hosts expect you to enjoy your time with them and
appreciate their hospitality.
- Avoid wearing expensive items or
accessories such as watches, necklaces,
bracelets, or earrings. These may attract attention and lead to requests
for gifts, which could create uncomfortable situations and affect your
relationship with the community.
- Always ask for permission before
taking photos as a sign of respect.
Guidelines for a Meaningful &
Respectful Experience
🚫 Do not assume that the tribes understand or relate to
your lifestyle.
🚫 Do not impose your comforts or habits on them.
